Pure need & right timing. I was destined to create Chillhouse, but it was a bit of a happenstance situation where I was exhausted and realized I needed this so badly. My husband and I were in dire need of massages and started daydreaming about our ideal spa destination in NYC. We needed an affordable approach to relaxation; luxury or seedy establishments couldn't be the only options.
I think a little delulu goes a long way. I'm realistic about where I am on the day to day but insanely unrealistic for what I want my life to look like. Which is why every step along the journey has ended up getting me closer to my end goal. Also, I always resisted being focused on one thing because I never thought of Chillhouse as a one-size-fits-all brand. And I still don't. But I will admit that focusing on nailcare has done wonders for us. It was a category that was ripe for innovation & ready for a strong player. We eased our way in with press ons and now are full throttle in it with our latest launch, Forever Wear, our gel-like long wear polish.
Covid, hands down. It was the wild wild west in every sense of the statement. We somehow made it out alive thanks to a lot of PPP loans and being scrappy and quick to pivot. It gave us time to launch Chill Tips, and eventually, that changed the course of our business.
Stay authentic to you. Always go back to your origin story and find one important mission and stick to it. You need a guiding light; otherwise, you're going to fall off course.
So many. Babba Rivera has been a mentor to me in so many ways. She's a mom of 4, Latina, a business savant, super chic and noble, and on the cover of Inc Magazine. My business soul sister through and through. I have too many to name though, but I had to spotlight her because it really does feel like it's her year. I'm in awe!
Thing: my phone. Is that an obvious answer though? Non-obvious answer: heels. LOL.
Aside from maybe a couple of fashion trends, none. :-) I'm excited for people to continue figuring out their own individual style & for Chillhouse to give them the tools to discover what's best for their nails.
Probably How I Built This by Guy Raz. I want to say it raised me during the darkest times of my business. Helped me push through. Now my best teachers are my network, and I'm lucky that I have the best boss women in my corner.
